1969 Cadillac Hearse
Coachwork by Miller-Meteor of Wayne, Indiana
Traditional Ladau End-Loader
Survivor with original finishes, low miles
Ready to be enjoyed as a classic or put back in service as special classic option
I am reluctantly selling my classic 1969 Cadillac Miller-Meteor Hearse.
This coach was made by the Miller-Meteor company, the same coach builders that made the 1959 Ambulance that was eventually turned into the famous "Ghostbusters" car in the 1984 hit movie.
Miller-Meteor was one of the most famous builders of Hearses and Ambulances in the middle part of the Twentieth Century. The A.J. Miller company was started in 1853 and the younger Meteor Motor Car company wasn't started until 1913. They merged forces, talent, and skill in 1956 to form the Miller-Meteor company.
This coach is what as known as a Traditional Landau endloader. The Traditional Landau means that it does not have quarter windows in the back, but instead a solid side decorated with angle irons, otherwise known as landau bars. It is an end loader, meaning just that, it is loaded from the back door, as it has conventional front hinged rear side doors instead of rear hinged "suicide doors" and cannot be loaded from the sidewalk or street.
This coach also has the rollers and guides built into the floor instead of having a roll out table. I like the arraignment this way, less moving parts!
This coach has not been treated to a "gothic" makeover, if this is your wish, you have a nice blank canvas to start with. Otherwise this coach retains it's original finishes- paint, headliners front and back, curtains, trim, upholstery. All is in great condition for 45 years old with the exception of the carpet in front of the driver (somebody should have had floor mats!) and the arm rest on the driver's door. Almost every thing on the car works- wipers (three speeds!), rim-blow horn, driving and running lights, dash lights, and rear cargo lights. The AM radio works, but can be pretty fuzzy depending on which station you are listening to. The clock and fuel gauges do not work. Neither does the passenger courtesy light which is missing it's lense. All glass is good and original, the alternator is new. There is a slow power steering fluid leak I have not bothered to investigate, as well as a few creaks and rattles befitting a 45 year old car that lesson as the chassis gets driven. Otherwise starts, drives and starts as expected. I do have a new in box Pertronix electric ignition I will include that I have not yet fitted. The dentent on the back door is worn and the heavy back door needs some gravity on its side to stay open. All 5 lock cylinders work as they should.
While the car is great for 44,000 miles, and great original condition for 45 years old, combine the two and it does show some wear, but in a consistent and dignified way. I wouldn't hesitate to buy oil stocks and drive it anywhere, but I would be aware of the vehicle's age and treat her accordingly. There is no warranty, implied, expressed or otherwise.
